Resumen de Las paraguayas y el cigarro poguasu

Este artículo analiza la peculiar costumbre de las mujeres paraguayas de finales del siglo XIX e inicio del XX, de fumar grandes cigarros hechos con hojas de tabaco liadas, popularmente conocidos como “cigarros poguasu”. Se parte del vínculo sobre la forma de consumir tabaco entre los pueblos originarios que habitaron el territorio paraguayo y sus alrededores cercanos, y su proyección hasta las épocas contemporáneas. Igualmente se pone en relieve cómo el hábito de fumar tabaco, que llegó a extenderse a nivel mundial, tuvo características particulares en Paraguay.

This article analyzes the peculiar habit of Paraguayan women of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century smoking big cigars made of bundled leaves of tobbaco, popularly known as “poguasu cigars”. It is part of the link with the way people consume tobacco among the native peoples who inhabited the Paraguayan territory and their immediate surroundings and its projection to contemporary times. It also highlights how smoking tobacco came to spread worldwide and had particular characteristics in Paraguay.
