    El pueblo maká es una etnia perteneciente a la familia lingüística mata- guayo, nativa del Chaco Boreal. Se realizaron investigaciones etnobiológicas durante lapsos interrumpidos a partir de 1974 hasta el presente. Se documentó de manera especial su forma de vida en el pasado, indagándose sus saberes sobre plantas y animales. En este trabajo se trata la presencia y el papel de las aves dueñas de la lluvia y las tempestades en su tradición cultural. Se destaca la importancia que dieron los maká a estas aves, en una región que sufre prolongadas sequías. Se sitúa el tema en un contexto de múltiples interrelaciones que comprometen a varios campos, por lo cual se da una síntesis en donde se aportan datos que abarcan la cosmología, el chamanismo, la mitología sobre el origen de las aves de las lluvias, el papel de los chamanes de las lluvias, así como la historia y la situación actual de los maká. Finalmente, se resalta la necesidad de encarar estas investigaciones en sociedades minoritarias y en riesgo de extinción.

    The Maka are an ethnic group belonging to the Mataguayo linguistic family that is native to Northern Chaco. From 1974 onwards, but for irregular periods, ethnobiological investigations have been conducted, carefully documenting the group’s previous way of life. Their knowledge concerning plants and animals has been of particular interest. This paper discusses the presence and the role in their cultural tradition of the birds that are masters of the rain and storms. It highlights the importance the Maka attached to these birds, in a region which experiences long periods of drought. The subject is set in a context of multiple interrelationships involving various different fields, and therefore it includes a summary providing details of the cosmology, shamanism, mythology on the origin of the birds of the rains, the role of the shamans of the rains, as well as the history and the current situation of the Maka. Lastly, emphasis is placed on the need to undertake such investigations in minority societies that are in danger of disappearing.
