Resumen de When Language Policies Change Without Changing: The University of Cyprus

Marilena Karyolemou

  • The aim of this paper is to show how language policies may superficially remain the same over a short period of time, while their meaning or value may change. Taking the University of Cyprus as an example, it will be shown how within the same country, different policies can be claimed to serve the same function and how the same language policy can be interpreted differently, depending on all the other options envisaged at the same time. Therefore, in order to correctly interpret a language policy option, we must examine it within the wider context of contrasting, and sometimes even opposing, language policy options present at the same time.
