In other refractories-related news, IM spoke to Turkish refractories producer, Superates, about the closure of its Istanbul factory ( p28 ) and provides an overview of Turkey's domestic magnesia industry ( pp35-37 ). This issue also features an interview with Brazilian market leader, Magnesita, about its plans to restructure its business and float a new subsidiary on the London Stock Exchange's Alternative Investment Market (AIM), in a drive to improve access to financing ( p29 ).
Yet lack of progress is often exaggerated and while new projects may be finding it difficult to get going under today's punishing conditions, Africa remains an important and well-established source of industrial minerals. In this issue, IM examines some of Africa's non-metallic mineral sectors, including the South African fluorspar industry, which is looking to enhance its downstream fluorochemicals capacity as an alternative to highly competitive export markets, as Shruti Salwan, IM Analyst, discovers ( p20 ). Elsewhere, Bruce McMichael, IM Correspondent, discusses some of the grand plans to upgrade Africa's logistics networks ( pp26-27 ), while Myles McCormick, Reporter, investigates the possibility that conflict mineral legislation - developed with African mining in mind - could be extended to industrial minerals.
