  • Resumen
    • In February 2012, Argentina's now ousted left wing administration, led by former president, Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, passed a law requiring all importers to make an Advance Sworn Import Declaration (Declaracion Jurada Anticipada de Importacion, or DJAI), in order to obtain government approval for shipments of goods via air, sea and road into Argentina.

Argentina is a member of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the DJAI legislation was quickly challenged by a consortium of WTO members, led by Japan, the US and the EU. After the WTO ruled in favour of these complaints, on the grounds that the licencing system unlawfully restricted imports, Argentina terminated the DJAI system on 23 December 2015.

Based on these numbers, if the anticipated boom in Argentina's lithium industry does emerge, the sector could find in a tight spot for soda ash supply - a situation which may prompt Argentina to either boost domestic production of the material, or revisit its import tarrifs.
