    Se titula La Historia Interminable — explicó Bastián — . Por fuera es de color cobre y brilla si se mueve de un lado a otro. Tiene dos serpientes dibujadas, una clara y otra oscura, que se muerden la cola. Por dentro está impreso en dos colores... y tiene un as letras capitulares muy grandes y bonitas (Ende, 1982:

    416) .

    ¿Qué es La historia interminable ? ¿Una novela fantástica? ¿Un libro para niños? En las décadas precedentes, el trabajo de destacados especialistas ha abierto el camino a diferentes niveles de l ectura en una obra que ha demostrado ser bastante más compleja, en cuanto a lo que a su significado se refiere, de lo que podría parecer a priori.

    Atendiendo a su valor polifónico y siguiendo la senda de aquellos estudios que vislumbraron un sentido esotér ico de la obra, observándola desde una perspectiva hermenéutica a través de sus principales elementos simbólicos, el presente artículo realiza un análisis estructural y semántico de carácter comparativo que concluye con la lectura de La historia interminab le como un elaborado tratado de alquimia espiritual y filosofía hermética

There are two snakes on the cover, a light one and a dark one, and they’re biting each other’s tails. Inside it’s printed in two different colours — and there are big beautiful capitals at the beginning of the cha pters.” (Ende, 1982: 416) What is The Neverending Story? A Fantasy novel? A children’s book? Over the decades, the studies of renowned specialists have cleared the way for many different levels of interpretation of this piece of work, which has shown itsel f to be much more complex regarding its meaning than it might appear at first glance. With specific attention to its polyphonic value and while following the path of these studies that have discerned an esoteric significance in the literary work, observing it from an interpretive perspective through its principle symbolical elements, this article conducts a structural and semantic analysis of the comparative character which concludes that The Neverending Story is an elaborate discourse on spiritual alchemy and Hermetic philosophy.
