Resuslts of the 1997 winter census of wildfowl and shorebirds from 45 localities of the Balearics islands are sumarized. Over 18.343 individuals belonging to 55 species were recorded. A greater censuring effort with the inclusion of 10 new localities has increased the number of individulas (41%) compared with last year census. The most abundant waterfowl are Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos), Shoveler (Anas clypeata), Coot (Folica otra), Teal (Anas crecca). Wigeon (Anas penelope) i Pochard (Aytlnxi ferina): the most abundant shorebirds are Lapwing ( Vanellus >>anellus), Golden Plover (Pluvialis apricaria), Kentish Plover (Charach• ius alexandrines), Dunlin (Calichris alpina) i Little Stint (Calicb•is minuta).
