"We have made Alcoa increasingly agile," the company's CEO, Klaus Kleinfeld, said. "We moved quickly to bring our costs down while capturing new opportunities." In Alcoa's non-metallurgical production, Alcoa's alumina plant in Port Comfort, Texas, was finally closed earlier this year according to plans outlined in January. The site produced non-metallurgical grade alumina as well as a minor volume of smelter-grade product.
"The Nendo Bauxite Project offers the potential for a very low cost operation. With no processing of ore required, a 'mine-stockpile-load-ship' operation is possible. The project is located close to the coast so that will limit haulage costs," an Iron Mountain Mining spokesperson told IM.
