  • Resumen
    • A bee-eater census carried out in 2010 found 24 breeding pairs on the island of Mallorca. This result shows a marked decline of at least 53% of the breeding population during the last decade. This decline has been accompanied by a significant reduction of suitable breeding areas. Fifteen of these breeding pairs were found in Son Bosc (Muro). The number of breeding colonies is negatively correlated to distance from wetlands. The deterioration of sand banks and the surrounding environment could be a limiting factor. These last breeding locations are threatened by urban development, reforestation and a lack of colony stability. The results of this study demonstrate that urgent measures must be taken to preserve this species
