Boyd relates his observations when visiting in Tokyo to interview a certain Waseda Talkersan, a robot. Researchers at Waseda University have created a machine that can mimic human speech under its own steam--or, in this case, its own compressed air. The design was too simple to match the richness of human sounds, but over years the researchers improved the robot's articulation by redesigning its palate, tongue, and lips to be more flexible.
