    A ocupação do interior de São Paulo, a expansão da cafeicultura e a formação de novas fronteirasb agrícolas tem na obra de Pierre Monbeig um clássico quando se trata do estudo desse processo. A rigor, Monbeig caracterizou o movimento humano, a expansão de fronteiras e o assentamento de populações como consequência da marcha pioneira. Neste artigo o intento, portanto, é apreender da ideia de marcha pioneira, conceito central em Pioneiros e fazendeiros, o tema da fundação de cidades novas ou a renovação das mais antigas devido ao avanço dessa marcha e os problemas resultantes, entre os quais a necessidade de estabelecer respostas institucionais frente ao abandono de crianças. Para tanto, temos como hipótese que asilos, orfanatos e reformatórios eram inéditos nas regiões novas da marcha pioneira e que foram estabelecidos em cidades como Ribeirão Preto extemporaneamente aos já existentes em outras localidades como é o caso de São Paulo.

    The occupation of the interior of the state of São Paulo, the expansion of coffee production and the formation of new agricultural frontiers, is a classic in the work of Pierre Monbeig when studying this process. Strictly speaking, Monbeig studied human movement, frontier expansion and the population settlement as a result of pioneering march. This article’s intent is to grasp the idea of pioneering march, a central concept in “Pioneiros e fazendeiros,” (Pioneers and farmers), the theme of the foundation of new towns, or the renewal of older ones due to the advance of the march and the resulting problems. Among these problems are the abandonment of children and the need to establish institutional responses. To this end, we hypothesized that hospices, orphanages and reformatories were unprecedented in the new regions of the pioneering march and were established in cities like Ribeirão Preto extemporaneously to existing ones in other locations such as Sao Paulo.
