O café, a indústria e a escola: Reflexões acerca da educação pública no interior paulista (franca, 1889-1970)

    The paper describes the process of constitution of the public schools in the far northeast of Sao Paulo state, more specifically, in the city of Franca, in a period marked by intense structural changes in this region between the 1890s and 1970. At that moment, the coffee crop increased the economy and also stimulated the gradual industrialization of this border town, located between the states of São Paulo and Minas Gerais. Nationally, the proclamation of the Republic, and the odd advents present in the twentieth century, such as the world wars, fomented big changes and the consequences were felt in different corners, distant from the centres of power and industry, as Franca-SP. Schooling in this period becomes a panacea for all social ills, so that “the cause of education” speech was adopted by all levels of government and also by civil society organizations that defending the access to the school by the popular classes, however , that goal was not always translated into victories as the documents consulted shown, as the minutes of the City Council, local newspapers , IBGE statistics , etc.

    O trabalho retrata o processo de constituição da rede pública de ensino no extremo nordeste paulista, mais especificamente, no município de Franca, em período marcado por intensas mudanças estruturais da região entre as décadas de 1890 e 1970. Nesse momento, a lavoura do café promoveu a dinamização da economia e estimulou também a industrialização gradativa dessa cidade fronteiriça, localizada entre os estados de São Paulo e Minas Gerais. A proclamação da República em nível nacional e os adventos impares presentes no século XX, como as guerras mundiais, fomentaram grandes alterações e os reflexos foram sentidos nos mais diferentes rincões distantes dos centros de poder e indústria, como em Franca-SP. A escolarização nesse período passa a ser panaceia para todas as mazelas sociais, de forma que “a causa educação” foi discurso adotado por todos os níveis de governo e também por organismos da sociedade civil que defendiam o acesso a escola pelas massas, contudo, esse objetivo nem sempre foi traduzido em conquistas, conforme documentos consultados, como atas da Câmara Municipal, jornais locais, estatísticas do IBGE, etc.
