That same environmentally-friendly selling point - the recyclability of glass - could be problematic for soda ash producers, according to [Rivet], who highlighted glass recycling, returnable (reusable) glass bottles, competition with other packaging materials and lightweighting as the key factors that will impact demand for soda ash from container glass producers in the future.
"Soda ash use in the container glass industry is down due to higher recycling but it remains a key raw material," Rivet said.
The amount of soda ash used in the production of container glass fell to just under 100kg per 1 tonne of glass in 2012 vs almost 120kg per 1 tonne of glass in 2009. During the same time period, however, the percentage of natural soda ash has increased compared with synthetic soda ash.
