PPG completes silica expansion at its Dutch plant, while Solvay is starting its own HDS production in Korea - both with a view to increase their supply of speciality silica fillers as demand by tyre manufacturers is on the rise.
Employing precipitated silica in the manufacturing formula is aimed at improving vehicle fuel efficiency, tyre traction and treadwear by about 5-10% compared with traditional silica-silane, according to PPG, as well as enhancing throughput during production.
"We (...) have increased flexibility for producing both conventional precipitated silica and Agilon silica," said Anup Jain, PPG vice president, specialty coatings and materials, in a statement.
