TiZir resumes titanium product output in Norway

  • Following a three month shut-down, the TiZir JV between MDL and Eramet has resumed production of titanium slag and high purity pig iron at its ilmenite upgrading facility in Norway, with shipments of chloride slag expected in early April.

    TiZir, the joint venture (JV) between ASX-listed Mineral Deposits (MDL) and French multinational mining and metallurgy company, Eramet, has resumed production of chloride titanium slag and high purity pig iron.

    MDL confirmed that ramp up at the Titanium & Iron ilmenite upgrading facility (TTI) in Tyssedal, Norway was proceeding as planned following a three month shut-down for furnace relining and capacity expansions last year.

    "Both products are to required specifications and were produced using ilmenite from the Grande Cote mineral sands operation," MDL said.

    The company added that shipments of chloride slag are expected to resume in early April.

    TTI has the capacity to produce over 200,000 tpa upgraded TiO2 feedstock at full production.

    TTI is part of TiZir, a 50:50 JV between MDL and Eramet. TiZir owns the Grande Cote mineral sands operation in Senegal, West Africa, which ships material to TTI in Norway for processing.

    The first batch of Grande Cote ilmenite was produced at the facility in Q2 2015.
