Human eggs have been fully matured from their most primitive state in the lab for the first time. If these produce healthy embryos, the technique could lead to new fertility treatments. Evelyn Telfer at the University of Edinburgh, UK, and her team started with tiny pieces of ovarian tissue from 10 volunteers, taken during caesarean sections. The team looked for primordial follicles--small structures that each have the potential to release an egg. Most follicles remain inactive during a woman's life, but some mature to release an egg in ovulation.
