    Les feines d’exploració que ha fet el Grup Nord de Mallorca dins els darrers anys a Mallorca, i principalment a la zona nord de l’illa, han donat com a fruit la localització de moltes cavitats de gran interès.

    En aquesta ocasió presentam l’estudi de l’Avenc del Puig Caragoler (Escorca) que, avui en dia, és la cavitat vertical més important de l’illa de Mallorca –amb una fondària de -318 m–, constituint un excel·lent exemple d’avenc de dissolució de la zona vadosa, desenvolupat en un entorn de muntanya mitjana-alta ben representatiu del carst de la Serra de Tramuntana.

    L’orografia del terreny, la climatologia, l’altura on es troba l’avenc i la disponibilitat de temps, han fet difícils les exploracions i la topografia d’aquesta cavitat, allargantse alguns anys.

    The exploration tasks carried out by the Grup Nord de Mallorca during the last years in Mallorca island –mainly in its northern sector– have permitted the localisation of abundant cavities, some of them of great speleological interest.

    In this paper the description and survey of Avenc del Puig Caragoler (Escorca) are presented, including as well some observations on the geology and geomorphology of the area. Nowadays this pot-hole is the most important in Mallorca, with a maximum depth of -318 m, being an excellent example of vertical solutional cavity of the vadose zone, developed in a mid to high mountain environment very characteristic of Serra de Tramuntana natural region.

    The rough mountain territory in which the pot-hole is located, together with some other non favourable factors (adverse climate conditions and scarcity of available time), have make difficult the exploration and survey tasks of this cavity developed along the last five years.
