    La responsabilidad respecto al comienzo y final de la vida humana ha adquirido una nueva dimensión ética. El hombre ha logrado conseguir en los últimos cien años mediante los avances científicos retrasar la muerte y en la actualidad entre el inicio y el término de una enfermedad irreversible pueden pasar muchos años. De tal forma que la vida humana, que hasta hace pocos años constaba de período intrauterino, niñez, adolescencia, madurez y vejez, se ha alargado con una nueva fase: los años de enfermedad terminal. Es necesaria una ética que analice todas estas situaciones que son relativamente nuevas y que se plantee una posición responsable en las últimas etapas de la vida humana.

    Responsibility with respect to the beginning and end of human life has acquired a new ethical dimension. Man has managed over the last one hundred years, by means of scientific advances, to delay death and at the present time extend the lapse between the beginning and end of terminal, irreversible diseases by many years. In this way human life, which until recently consisted of the intrauterine period, childhood, adolescence, maturity and old age, has been extended with a new phase: the length of terminal diseases. Ethics are necessary to analyze all these situations which are relatively new and which consider a responsible position toward the last stages of human life.
