Baland Jalal at the University of Cambridge wondered whether the mirror neuron system could be used to help people with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Working with his colleague Vilayanur Ramachandran at the University of California, San Diego, he studied 10 people with OCD symptoms, who experience disgust when touching things they consider even mildly contaminated. The resulting anxiety forces them to wash their hands compulsively.
