When it comes to understanding the flow of fluids like air or water, people's footing is reasonably solid. The equations of fluid dynamics can predict the flow of gases and liquids, at least until they become turbulent. Measure a few basic parameters such as pressure, viscosity and flow rate, and they can predict how oil will flow along a pipeline or ketchup will ooze from its bottle.
