The author responds to the 2012 Roepke Lecture in Economic Geography entitled "Who Needs the Nation-State?," by political scientist Dani Rodrik, which appears in this issue. Topics of economic geography considered include globalization, free trade, and the global financial crisis of 2008-2009. Rodrik's books "Has Globalization Gone Too Far?" and "The Globalization Paradox" are also discussed.
