    The way in which we read Leibniz has changed owing to the progressive publication of his writings and to the results obtained by applying the genetic method. Leibniz’s work does not present itself as a full and complete system, but as an open-ended enquiry, endlessly coming back to problems and inventing new conceptual means for solving them. By taking into account drafts, preparatory sketches, corrections and additions, the genetic method aims to grasp the movement of Leibniz’s thought in the making, while respecting the specific status of each text and reserving the possibility of a general interpretation.

    Notre manière de lire Leibniz a changé avec les progrès de l’édition de ses écrits et les résultats apportés par l’emploi de la méthode génétique. L’œuvre leibnizienne ne se présente pas comme un système, achevé, définitif, mais comme une réflexion ouverte, reprenant inlassablement les problèmes et inventant des moyens conceptuels nouveaux pour les résoudre. En prenant en compte brouillons et esquisses préparatoires, corrections et ajouts, la méthode génétique se donne pour tâche de ressaisir le mouvement de cette pensée au travail, sans négliger le statut particulier de chaque texte ni exclure toute possibilité d’interprétation générale.
