L’univers progresse-t-il ?: les modèles d’évolution du monde chez Leibniz

    This article explores the different models of progress discussed by Leibniz in two Latin texts written between 1694 and 1969. It shows the different conceptions of perfection that are implied by these two models, namely the hypothesis of a continual evolution of creatures and of a world without progress, and that of a universal perfection. Although the thesis of the best possible world holds regardless of which hypothesis is maintained, the Principle of the Best seems to favor the idea of the perpetual progress of the world, and permits us, if not to determine the particular form that this progress must take, at least to rule out certain models of evolution.

    Cet article étudie les différents modèles de progrès possibles répertoriés par Leibniz dans deux textes latins datés des années 1694-1696. Il montre la conception de la perfection que ces modèles impliquent, dans l’hypothèse d’une évolution des créatures et du monde sans progrès, et dans le cas d’un perfectionnement universel. Quoique la thèse du meilleur monde vaille quelle que soit l’hypothèse retenue, il apparaît que le principe du meilleur plaide en faveur d’un perpétuel progrès du monde et permet, sinon de déterminer la forme particulière qu’il doit prendre, tout du moins d’écarter certains modèles d’évolution.
