In this article the author discusses aspects of the possible contributions by foreign language departments regarding internationalizing the curriculum of U.S. higher education. He is critical of the lack of preparation by college students to study foreign languages as well as the curricula being incompatible with the students' needs. Also investigated is foreign language departments' expansion of their own departmental curricula to foster the use of several languages throughout higher education.
