Resumen de Urban Language Teaching and Learning: The Community Connection.

  • The author describes the International Newcomer Academy (INA) in the Fort Worth, Texas, Independent School District (FWISD), the challenges of language teaching and learning English and her experiences working with immigrant students in attempting to meet state educational mandates. According to the author, immigrant students in the FWISD are immediately given English proficiency exams and placed at various instruction levels at the INA. The author discusses the establishment of an advanced placement (AP) course program in Spanish for the middle school level as well as courses such as Spanish for Business, Legal, and Medical professionals. According to the author, FWISD has succeeded in reorienting school administrators, teachers, and students toward programmatic thinking and development.
