El western patagónico: la imagen del indígena norteamericano en la imagen Selknam

    En el presente trabajo, se realiza una reflexión de carácter comparativo para establecer algunos de los dispositivos utilizados en la construcción de la imagen selknam en la película Tierra del Fuego, dirigida por Miguel Littin (2000). Esta comparación descansa en el supuesto de que en la representación, de este pueblo originario del extremo sur de América, se adhiere a una serie de atributos que provienen de un indígena construido visualmente por la industria del cine norteamericano. Este indígena cinematográfico pasó a formar parte de las convenciones que identificaron al western, género por excelencia de Hollywood. El texto se inicia con una caracterización de este género cinematográfico, haciendo especial énfasis en la representación del indígena y como este se ha transformando a través de los años. Posteriormente se describe la imagen del selknam en la película Tierra del Fuego, agrupando sus atributos en torno a una serie de iconos claves presentes en la producción de Littin y en las películas norteamericanas. Finalmente, en este artículo se discuten algunos de los mecanismos utilizados para la representación del indígena en el cine.

    In the present work, a reflection of comparative nature will be made, oriented on establishing some of the tools used in the construction of the Selknam image in the film Tierra del Fuego, directed by Miguel Littin (2000). This comparison rests on the assumption that the representation of this aboriginal people from the extreme South of America is based on a series of attributes coming from an aboriginal visually constructed by the North American film industry. This cinematographic indigenous became part of the conventions that identify the Western, a Hollywood genre par excellence. The text begins with a characterization of this cinematographic genre, putting special emphasis in the indigenous representation and his transformation across the years. Later the Selknam image in the movie Tierra del Fuego is describe, grouping its attributes around a sequence of key icons present in Littin's production and in the North American movies. Finally, in this article there are discussed some of the mechanisms used for the representation of the indigenous in the cinema.
