People who are more aware of their heartbeat are better at perceiving the emotions of others--a finding that might help some people with autism. To generate emotions, it is thought that people first need to interpret their body's internal state--a process called interoception. So if people see a rabid dog, they feel fear only once they recognise an increase in their heart rate or feel their palms get sweaty.
