Sex can disrupt the balance of bacteria in the vagina, and might put women at risk of infections. The microbial communities of healthy vaginas tend to be dominated by a particular type of bacteria. Women with higher levels of other bacteria are more likely to get urinary tract infections, or even give birth prematurely. But it is unclear whether these bacteria are a cause or a result of these problems. To find out if sexual activity can affect vaginal bacteria and, potentially, women's health, Lenka Vodstrcil at Melbourne Sexual Health Centre in Australia and her team tracked the bacteria in 52 volunteers' vaginas
