A muscle stimulation system aims to evoke empathy by triggering involuntary hand gestures in one person that mirror mood changes in another. The system could be used to emotionally connect couples in long-distance relationships, says Max Pfeiffer at the University of Hannover in Germany. But Brian Parkinson at the University of Oxford is skeptical that gestures can evoke a single emotion and says it wouldn't always be desirable to experience someone else's feelings
