Bloom talks about how empathy makes the world worse. Neuroscience and everyday experience both reveal that its relatively easy to put themselves in the shoes of someone close, who is attractive and friendly, or who looks like them. Also, empathy makes them zoom in on an individual. They can't put themselves in the shoes of a million people or even a dozen. Finally, empathy is malleable, and can be abused to sway people into backing all sorts of positions, including cruel ones.
