    A leitura literária pode melhor desenvolver a empatia pelo Outro, a simpatia inclusiva e a consciência crítica intercultural, traços que os modelos de competência intercultural mencionam. No entanto, a literatura não é geralmente mencionada nestes modelos que também ignoram a aprendizagem de línguas estrangeiras. Este artigo discute o importante papel da literatura e da aprendizagem de línguas quer para  comunicação intercultural quer para uma educação para a cidadania global essenciais na promoção da paz. Com uma pedagogia adequada, a literatura na aprendizagem de línguas pode melhor contribuir para a formação do falante intercultural, desenvolver a conciência crítica intercultural, a capacidade de diálogo e de lidar com situações delicadas sem julgamentos e medos.

    Literary reading can better develop empathy towards the Other, an inclusive sympathy and critical intercultural awareness, features that belong to the most models of intercultural competence. Yet literature is absent from these models which also pay little attention to foreign language learning. This article discusses the important role of literature either for intercultural communication either for global citizenship education, that play an important role for the peace in the world. With suitable pedagogical approaches, literature in language learning can better contribute for the formation of the intercultural speaker and develop critical awareness, the capacity to reason well and handle delicate situations carefully without fear and judgment.
