  • Zapping the brain with electricity really does seem to improve some medical conditions, and might be useful for treating depression. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) uses electrodes to send a weak current across the brain. Thousands of studies have suggested that stimulating brain tissue like this can help treat a range of conditions including tinnitus, depression and stroke. However, replicating such studies has been difficult, and two recent analyses found no evidence that tDCS is effective, leading some to say the technique is largely a sham.
