In this essay, I argue through analysis of the genre of campaign announcements that third-party presidential candidates have rhetorical norms of their own that address their unique challenges as political outsiders. Specifically, I contend that their announcements are a variant of the announcement genre and are warranted by the recurring situational barriers, perceived strategic constraints, and overall purposes for minor-party presiden- tial campaigns. In addition to offering an alternative theory of third-party announce- ments based on analysis of over 40 such statements, I provide three case studies — including statements by Progressive Henry Wallace, Independent Eugene McCarthy, and Reform Party nominee Patrick Buchanan — to demonstrate this variant of the genre.
Finally, I conclude by discussing the implications of this study for understanding third-party rhetoric.
