Under the United Nations Charter and the EU's Lisbon Treaty, the European Union can deploy peace missions following the United Nations model. These European missions -termed International Crisis Management Operations- have several mandates, amongst them the promotion and protection of human rights. The establishment of these European Union peacekeeping oopertions for human rights promotion and protection is one of the instruments of the EU's external relations to practice the common values represented by the EU as a global actor. This article explores whether or not EU practice matches this aim.
