  • This article discusses the difficulties encountered by scientists trying to identify the precise location of atoms in a nanostructured material. Because crystallographic analyses of atomic structure alone cannot describe nanomaterials, probabilistic approaches that apply algorithms such as the pair distribution function (PDF) are also used in their assessment. Research into the improvement of x-ray microscopy so as to simplify this process is described.
