This article discusses research into the development of photovoltaic cells that can capture the full spectrum of light, and thus operate under overcast weather conditions. The work of chemist Malcolm Chisholm to develop a photovoltaic cell out of oligothiophene doped with tungsten and molybdenum, a polymer that is sensitive to all light between ultraviolet and near infrared wavelengths, is described. This polymer is sensitive to a broader range of the solar spectrum through phosphorescence.
