The article evaluates how diversity in organisms, a concept that can be traced back to the postulations of evolutionary scientist Charles Darwin, derive from alterations in DNA. A brief overview of Darwin's theories set forth in his book "The Origin of Species" is presented. While Darwin could not explain the force behind variants, the scientist Gregor Mendel later described genetic factors and inheritance patterns. The advents in DNA sequencing and genome mapping are discussed. INSETS: Seeking Variation;STICKLEBACKS ADAPT;Mutations Meet Culture.
