The cover story is provided which discusses the growing of new blood vessels, known as collateral vessels, to redirect cardiac blood flow and help prevent and treat heart attacks. The role that the development of collateral vessels plays in the directing of blood to heart muslces in need of oxygen, or ischemic regions, is discussed.
