Hawkins introduces a task that encouraged students to explore the structure of fractions using the multiple representations of area, discrete and linear. The task expands the thinking of the students and the teachers. A recipe has been used to explore the representations of mixed-number multiplications. Reflections of using a recipe to explore the representations are also outlined including the effectiveness of the lessons in deepening the thinking of the students and the understanding that multiplication is actually repeated additions.
