Pinar del Río, zona eminentemente agrícola del occidente de Cuba, es reconocida como la región donde se cultiva el mejor tabaco del mundo. En sus vegas se producen las aromáticas hojas que permiten confeccionar los tan deseados habanos. Se reconoce que el cultivo de esta planta favoreció la llegada del ferrocarril en 1894, del telégrafo en 1896 y la creación en 1937 de la Estación Experimental del Tabaco, ubicada en el Municipio San Juan y Martínez. Por lo que se puede asegurar que el desarrollo local pinareño transita inexorablemente por el cultivo de esta solanácea y otras producciones agrícolas. Considerando lo anterior el equipo editorial de Avances publica en este número resultados investigativos asociados a la conservación de los suelos tabacaleros y la distancia entre plantas de tabaco cultivadas bajo tela. Otros resultados que tributan al desarrollo agrícola están asociados en esta oportunidad al comportamiento productivo del frijol y el arroz usando estimulantes para su crecimiento, así como un análisis de la estrategia de cambio para la actividad agropecuaria cañera y la actividad innovadora de la empresa avícola, PICAN. También en este número encontramos investigaciones generadas a partir del proceso docente de tutoría y de extensión universitaria, así como resultados de un caso de estudio sobre gestión integrada de desarrollo local sostenible.

Pinegrove of the River, eminently agricultural area of the occident of Cuba, it is recognized as the region where the best tobacco in the world is cultivated.
