    On the pages of the Diamantina’s newspapers, published during the First Republic, local elites revealed the existence of the dilemma of belonging to a sertão city. After all, they either propagated the idea that Diamantina belonged to the Minas Gerais and Brazilian’s sertão, which shared a history of destitution, abandonment and misery; or that the city belonged to a society that was formed around gold and diamond mines, a place of civilization and closer to the development of cities on the coast. Therefore, we will analyze the representations of the city and the northern sertão of Minas Gerais created by Diamantina’s leaders.

    Nas páginas dos jornais de Diamantina-MG, publicados durante a Primeira República, as elites locais revelaram a existência do dilema de pertencer a uma cidade do sertão. Afinal, divulgavam um imaginário que ora associava Diamantina ao sertão mineiro e brasileiro, compartilhando um histórico de carências, abandono e misérias, ora à sociedade que se formou em volta das minas de ouro e diamantes, local da civilização e mais próxima do desenvolvimento das cidades do litoral. Sendo assim, analisaremos a seguir as representações compartilhadas pelas lideranças diamantinenses sobre sua cidade e o sertão norte mineiro.
