    La península escandinava se interpone entre el noroeste de Rusia y las aguas libres del Atlántico, proporcionando a su poseedor el control de los accesos marítimos del noroeste ruso, tanto a través del Báltico, como por el Ártico. Precisamente la aproximación estratégica de Rusia hacia la región establece el marco que define la seguridad en el área, moldeando la política de seguridad y defensa de las naciones escandinavas. La crisis en Ucrania ha venido a confirmar el cambio de la estrategia rusa en relación a las naciones occidentales, hacia la confrontación y modificando por tanto la percepción sobre Rusia, que ahora se considera un riesgo para la estabilidad de Europa. Además, el problema de la seguridad de la región escandinava es fundamentalmente resultado de la percepción rusa sobre su propia seguridad, que en ese área está condicionada por el insoluble problema del control de los accesos marítimos a Rusia.

    The Scandinavian Peninsula stands between Northwestern Russia and the open waters of the Atlantic, providing its owner with an obvious control of Russia´s Northwestern maritime approaches, both through the Baltic and as well the Arctic. It is precisely Russia’s nowadays assertiveness towards Northern Europe the defining element of security in the area, and so it shapes the security and defense policy of the Scandinavian nations. The crisis in Ukraine has confirmed a change in Russia's strategy in its relations with the West, to confrontation, which has led to a major shift in the perception of Russia, now it is thought a risk for stability in Europe. Moreover, the problem of security in the Nordic region is related to the own Russian perception about risk, which in turn is conditioned by the impossible problem of controlling its Northwestern maritime approaches.
