  • Resumen
    • Global drilling activity up 42% y-o-y; Bentonite spurned as oil-based mud favoured; Cheaper, lower SG, barytes being imported According to the oilfield services company Baker Hughes, the total number of active drilling rigs stood at 2,110 in July, an increase of 42% year-on-year, and the highest level in nearly two years.

The reason for this increase lies primarily in booming US drilling activity.

With oil prices flirting around the $50/bbl, compared to lows of just over half that early in 2016, onshore drilling has fired up in the US, with 953 rigs active in July according to Baker Hughes data, an increase of some 112% year-on-year.
