Notes on the northeast Atlantic Cbauoetia.

Recent species of the genus Cbauaaia living in northeast Atlantic and partially lVest Africa re dealt. For each species is given the description, distribution and photo. Living animal is described and some photos are given. Sheli variability is also discussed. List of generic, specific and variety nmes is included.

Cbauaetia tenili$illpta (Dautz., 1891) is reported for Algerian coasts; this species is very similar to C. candìdisim (Philippi, 1816) from which it differs for the sculptute ofprotoconch that shows well developed aial ribs.

Cbawetia giuncbioriln flo\. spec. is described from Siciiy; its distribution seems to be restricted to Sicily. Fossil records (upper Pliocene) are reported for the Strait of Messina.

Check oftype material proved that Chauaetia bourguignatì {Incard,1892) is based on a not Mediterrmean turrid. Cbauaaia retifera (Brugnote, 1880) is considered synonym of C. Pelli:pblcae (Reeve, 1845), bced on Monterosato and Pallary indications. Variability of C. brunnea (Donovan, 1804) along Atlantic and Mediterranem coasts is discussed; specimens from §7est Africa show a surprising variability and need further investigations.

Type specimens in Monterosato collection have been also studied: Chauaetia drorata (MTS, 1889) and C. ffinìs (MTS, 1889) are considered colour variations of C. twitellata (Deshayes,1835).

Two Cbauuaia from lTest Africa, found different from all the other known species, and named Cbauaetia sp. 1 md Chawetia sp.2, are described and figured.
