Low demand from China - the single largest buyer of chemical-grade chromite, which is used in the local dying and tanning industry as well as in chemicals manufacturing - was the main driver of the price decline. On January 2, the Industrial Minerals price assessment for chemical-grade chromite was $250-270 per tonne fob South Africa while foundry grade chromite, wet bulk, was assessed at $400-450 per tonne fob South Africa.
