Cascio comments on the trial release of sterile males of the Aedes aegypti mosquito--the primary carrier of Zika--on Key Haven. Known as the sterile insect technique, this is a proven way to stem outbreaks of disease. Females that mate with these males produce no offspring. But making male mosquitoes sterile by exposing them to gamma radiation--the usual method--is tricky. They tend to be more vulnerable to its effects than other insects, becoming sterile but so weakened they can't successfully compete for mates
