Mainly devoted to the interpretation of the ‘‘ categorical’’perception phenomena, the paper intends to provide a philosophical introduction to the problems and methods of contemporary cognitive science. A simple example establishes the inadequacy of the behavioristic methodology as well as the necessity of distinguishing between ‘‘ observable ’’and ‘‘ objectivable ’’. The hypothesis of the modularity of peripheric systems is illustrated by the case of the perception of speech, and the significance of this hypothesis with respect to the question of the influence of beliefs on perception is discussed.

Essentiellement consacré à la signification et à l’interprétation des phénomènes de perception « catégorielle », l’article vise à introduire le public philosophique aux problèmes et aux méthodes des sciences cognitives contemporaines. Un exemple simple établit l’inadéquation de la méthodologie behavioriste et la nécessité de distinguer entre « observable » et « objectivable ». L’hypothèse de la modularité des systèmes périphériques est illustrée par le cas de la perception des sons parlés, et la signification de cette hypothèse relativement à la question de la dépendance des percepts par rapport aux croyances est discutée.
