January shows strong spike in Chinese fluorspar export volumes

  • Chinese export patterns suggest that there is a lot of acid-grade fluorspar material available, but supplies may be being manipulated to increase profits.

    Chinese export data for fluorspar showed a 76% upswing in exports in the first month of 2018.

    The latest data published by China Customs shows a spike in the country’s fluorspar exports in January, with 23,940 tonnes being shipped out, representing a 76% increase from December’s figure of 13,603 tonnes.

    According to the data, the average price for fluorspar exported in January was $228.50 per tonne, which would indicate that the material leaving China was metallurgical-grade fluorspar. This would reinforce the notion that there are no significant quantities of acid-grade material available for export.
