Resumen de TiO2 market quiet with ban in France; EC mulls cancer warning

William Clarke

  • Regulators move to increase restrictions on titanium dioxide (TiO2), a widely used food additive, over health concerns, with the market yet to react to the news.France will ban the use of TiO2 powder in food by the end of 2019, the country’s environmental minister announced on May 16 this year. In March 2018, EU member states voted to support a change to the classification of titanium dioxide, to make reference to a possible link to cancer. In August 2017, the BCF told Industrial Minerals that “once titanium dioxide is incorporated in paint, coatings, printing inks or wall coverings, there is no risk of being exposed to the inhalation of the solid particles of the substance.”
