Terry Sejnowski at the Salk Institute for Biological Sciences in La Jolla CA, discovered patterns of electrical activity that sweep through the sleeping brain in a circular motion. He nicknamed them after Carrie Fisher's famous hairstyle in the movie Star Wars. The waves begin their journey in the hippocampus, a region responsible for memory retrieval.
